English: View of villa Hartekamp in Heemstede (The Netherlands) from the Leiden-Haarlem canal towpath. This villa was once the home of George Clifford, for a while patron of the young botanist Carl Linnaeus. This is the place where Linnaeus stayed for over two years from September 1735 to October 1737, and where he wrote his Hortus Cliffortianus. He had been introduced to Clifford, a wealthy Amsterdam banker, by Johannes Burman of Amsterdam. Clifford collected rare plants as a hobby and asked Linnaeus to come to live at his mansion as his physician and superintendent of his garden. Today little remains of the garden but a few American oaks and pines among the dense woods.

De villa was ooit de buitenplaats van George Clifford, enige tijd de beschermheer van de jonge botanicus Carl Linnaeus. In dit buiten verbleef Linnaeus ruim twee jaar van september 1735 tot oktober 1737, en hij schreef er de Hortus Cliffortianus. Hij was voorgesteld aan Clifford, een schatrijke Amsterdamse bankier, door Johannes Burman uit Amsterdam. Clifford verzamelde zeldzame planten en vroeg Linnaeus om bij hem te komen wonen als lijfarts en als opzichter van zijn plantencollectie. Tegenwoordig is er, op een paar Amerikaanse eiken en dennen na, weinig over van de eens zo beroemde tuin.

Es ist dieses Haus in dem Linnaeus während ein wenig mehr als zwei Jahre, vom September 1735 bis Oktober 1737 gewohnt hat, und wo er sein Hortus Cliffortianus schrieb. Er war vorgestellt worden an Clifford, ein wohlhabender Amsterdam-Banker, von Johannes Burman aus Amsterdam. Clifford sammelte seltene Pflanze als Liebhaberei und hat Linnaeus gebeten in seiner Villa wohnen zu kommen als sein Arzt und Aufseher seines Gartens. Heute bleibt wenig vom berühmten Garten übrig ausser einigen amerikanischen Eichen und Kiefern unter dem dichten Holz.

C'est cette maison où Linnaeus a résidé pendant un peu plus de deux années, de septembre 1735 jusqu'à octobre 1737, et où il a écrit son Hortus Cliffortianus. Il avait été présenté à Clifford, un banquier d'Amsterdam tres riche, par Johannes Burman d'Amsterdam. Clifford a rassemblé des plantes rares comme passe-temps et a demandé Linnaeus pour venir habiter chez lui en tant que son médecin et surveillant de son jardin. Aujourd'hui peu reste du jardin célèbre en dehors de quelques chênes et pins américains parmi les bois denses.
